Nantucket has plenty of pizza joints, though few can match the excellence of Pi Pizzeria, famous for its wood-fired brick oven pizza.
As with most success stories, Pi Pizzeria had a humble beginning, established as a small entity at the back of a Nantucket wine and cheese shop. This eatery’s proprietor wanted to preserve classic Neapolitan recipes, a goal that paid off in 2006 with the establishment of the pizzeria.
From the outside, it is hard to imagine that Pi Pizzeria is an eatery courtesy of its subtle design reminiscent of Nantucket cottages. Nevertheless, the delicious aroma of hot pizza ushers you into this establishment, where you will appreciate its simple yet classy outlook.
Pi Pizzeria is spacious and divided into two sections, the dining area and the bar. The restaurant opens at 11:30 for lunch: the service is take-out only from the opening time until 2 pm. You can pass by for a hot sub take-out, with options like meatballs, meatball parmesan, steak, and cheese, or eggplant parmesan.
Cold subs Italian, Sicilian, and Calabrasa and have vinegar, olive oil, tomatoes, lettuce, and onion dressing.
Pi Pizzeria is famous for its handmade pizzas prepared in the classic Neapolitan style. This establishment bakes the pizza in Nantucket’s sole commercial wood-fired brick oven.
Start your Pi pizza sampling drive by ordering the Classic Cheese Pi, made with mozzarella cheese and San Marzano tomato sauce. Toppings include pepperoni, shrimp, New England clam, Esposito’s sausage, and fresh mozzarella or goat cheese. Add veggies like fresh or roasted garlic, tomatoes, onions, broccoli, mushrooms, and spinach for a boost of nutrients.
Specialty Pi pizzas are marinara, margherita, Great Italian, white clam, and gambella. Pick your favorite pizza and add as many toppings as you want.
Besides pizza, Pi Pizzeria also specializes in Italian cuisine. You can check into this restaurant for dinner and prepare your palate with appetizers like garlic bread, calamari frita, and clams in tomato brodo. Also, try soups like Minestrone and Tuscan white bean or mixed greens and classic Caesar salads.
Popular entrées include lasagna with ragu or marinara, pasta with ragu or marinara, chicken piccata, New York strip steak, and cod putanesca. Before making your entrée order, you should pick penne or spaghetti and ragu meat sauce or marinara.
You can have carrot cake, tiramisu, cannoli, or chocolate espresso cake for dessert. All the desserts are prepared in-house. Pass by the lively bar for refreshments before leaving Pi Pizzeria.
Keep in mind that there are no reservations at Pi Pizzeria, and it remains closed on Tuesdays.
